Rare Watkins Johnson Mdl 8894-A Demodulator System Consists of 2 units

I CANNOT EXPORT these items from the USA, and sale MUST BE USA PAYMENT & USA DELIVERY. * I believe this is a Watkins Johnson Model 8894-A receiver system consisting of 2 units, a Front-End Assembly type WJ-8894A-FEA (S/N# 20) and a Demodulator-Control Panel type WJ-8894A-D/CP (S/N# 20). This is a very rare item, only a handful were ever produced. The front panel of the Demodulator / Control Panel unit has a loudspeaker, a ¼” headphone jack, 9 knobs, and 5 switches. The knobs are: Audio Gain, Reception Mode (AM/FM/Pulse), I.F. Bandwidth (15/100/1000/4000KHz), AFC (On / Off), Threshold (-70 to –20dB in 5dB steps), a 4 position knob marked “M” (1/2/3/4), Increased Sensitivity (0dB / 20dB), Operating Mode (Local/Remote/Programmed Remote), and Tune Fine(Normal)to Slew. The 5 switches are Power (On/Off), Audio Alarm (On/Off), and Autoscan (On/Off), with 2 pushbuttons one for up, the other for down. In addition, on the front panel there is a digital frequency display labeled MHz, 2 indicators “Alarm” and “Invalid”, and 3 panel meters, The scale on the meters are as follow: Tuning (Low-0-High), Ratio (60 to 0), and Signal Strength (-110dBm to –30dBm). The Front-End Assembly only has a Power (On/Off) switch on its front panel. The rear panel of the Demodulator / Control Panel unit has 9 connectors, 2 fuse holders, and 1 switch on it. One fuse is labeled 1A SB, the other 1/2A SB. The switch is recessed and is used to select the power source as either 115VAC or 230VAC (50 – 400Hz AC Power). 3 of the 9 connectors are for power or control. The AC power connector has 3 pins, the DCP/FEA connector has 18 contacts (connects to the FEA I believe), and the remote connector has 37 contacts and a dust cover. The 6 remaining connectors are type BNC-female and have “J” designators but someone has penciled the following abbreviations: “A” I.F., “B” I.F., SM (Spectrum Monitor), I.F., VID (Video), and AUD (Audio). The rear panel of the Front-End Assembly has 6 connectors, 2 fuse holders, and 2 switches. One fuse is labeled 1A SB the other 1/2A SB. One switch is recessed and is used to select the power source as either 115VAC or 230VAC (50 – 400Hz AC Power) the other is marked “Test” (On/Off). 2 of the 6 connectors are for power or control. The AC power connector has 3 pins, the digital interconnect connector has 18 contacts and connects the FEA to the Demodulator / Control Panel (I Believe). Of the remaining 4 connectors, 3 are type BNC-female and are marked Channel “A” I.F., Channel “B” I.F., and 40MHz comb out. The remaining connector is a type TNC-female and it is marked RF Input. I DO NOT HAVE the 18 pin plug to 18 pin plug interconnection cable assembly required to connect the two units together nor do I have the 2 line cords with 3 contact connectors to power these units. The connector are rather common and not very expensive and they appear to be available from companies like Newark Electronics and Allied Electronics, etc. Both of the units measure approximately 5=1/4” High X 17” Wide X 21” Deep not including the bottom feet. EACH unit weighs approximately 36 pounds (Un-packaged). The seals on the internal modules have not been broken, a number of these seals have the year 1984 marked on them. These 2 units are beautifully constructed with the best parts available in America at the time and reflect a lot of pride in workmanship as well as careful consideration of the design. They are both extremely well shielded and robustly constructed in such a manner that makes me think that this was some kind of a measurement receiver possibly constructed for “Tempest” work but I really don’t know for certain what this unit is. Maybe someone out in eBay land recognizes these and can provide me some info about them. A knowledgeable eBay member recently provided me the following information so I am posting it now in the Ad ** Dear m2wave, In 2006, there was another 8894 on eBay, Serial number 14, in operable condition. I didn't write to that seller but his photos showed a tuning range that topped out in single digit MHz. My hunch is it was made to provide a scanning function in a range similar to the very popular DMS-105 demodulator, of which DOD agencies purchased many. Ferreting out subcarriers was a prime target for these agencies in those days. They ordered many different "demodulators" most designed with sensitivity as good as receivers. My database, which ends in 1994, has only 4 items listed as "classified jobs" out of over 4,000 pieces of equipment. ** I have never had time to hook these units up so I am offering them for sale to someone who does have an interest in these rare Watkins Johnson items.
