Description: US WWII M-1 Helmet Front Seam, Fixed Bale, Named G.I., Original OD-3 chin-straps, Red “Damage Control” Paint, Westinghouse “High Pressure" Liner This auction lot includes the following items:1-US WWII M-1 Helmet Shell*Details: Front Seam, Fixed Bale, Manufactured by-McCord Radiator and Manufacturing Company of Detroit Michigan, Shell Production mark-#231A 1-US WW2 M-1 Liner*Details: Westinghouse stamped with what looks to be number 78(?). The sweat stained olive drab number 3 herringbone twill cotton webbing has a couple of rips, but is mostly intact (with the exception of the missing Nape strap). Unpainted “A” washers and the light khaki webbing point to this being an early "high pressure" liner. Chinstrap and sweatband are also missing. Exterior has the original OD paint…which is in great shape. Over this original OD coat, there has been a second (field painted?) coat of lighter OD paint…which is about 60-70% intact. There is much cracking and chipping to this outer layer, which is clearly visible in the pictures. The insignia hole in the front looks to be modified to accept a double pin (officers?) insignia with a larger hole…and an additional hole added (you can see this modification fully in the pictures). This helmet will look fantastic in your WW2 collection display, or on a shelf in your man-cave! Condition:This early WWII (’41-’43) M-1 helmet is in very good shape. The fixed bales are undamaged and solid. Both sides of the original OD sewn-on cotton web olive drab shade 3 chinstrap is present and firmly attached, without the fraying and excessive wear commonly found near the bales. Exterior was re-painted red for Damage Control” duties at some point, and it appears the G.I. painting this helmet got a little of the red paint on the chinstrap (see pictures for details). There are a few chips and plenty of scratches. But overall the exterior is in good shape. The interior is also in very good condition for an early war helmet. There is a slight bit of rust, and some water residue rings present, where the helmet was apparently used as a shaving kit/wash basin sometime in the past. There is also a name and unit number (Hanley 41st) very artistically painted in black. This shell has one of the most interesting, and cool interiors of all the helmets we have sold!
