About the Book:This book will take you on a creative journey with Tim Holz's 'Compendium of Curiosities,' a book that pleasantly surprised me beyond its anticipated focus on technique tutorials. The initial pages serve as a comprehensive guide to the tools of the trade, offering insights into their applications. Tim introduces the intriguing section titled "artful thoughts," sparking imaginative ideas to elevate your projects with unexpected elements like spinners, plates, gears, clasps, link chains, and more. The book provides ample samples to inspire your creativity. Following this, delve into 36 pages of concise yet thorough tutorials suitable for both novice scrapbookers and beyond. The concluding showcase of sample work spans tags, frames, book covers, and even jewelry, offering endless possibilities. In my view, this book is a valuable resource, particularly for beginners seeking a well-rounded exploration of artistic possibilities. Some Book Reviews:5/5 stars - A Must Have For the Serious Paper CrafterOK, I'll admit it...I'm a Tim Holtz groupie. I love his designs, love the fact that his products really deliver and I love the way he helps to unlock one's creativity. His new book, Compendium of Curiosities, is just amazing. The clear directions, excellent photography and off the hook creativity will make your fingers itch to get in your studio and create! This is a real how to guide, not just a pretty picture book. It is heavy on demonstration and step by step process. It's not just a book filled with projects for you to try and duplicate. It is all about technique...how to use papercrafting technique to achieve that much desired shabby-chic/vintage look on tags, altered art and decorative items. It is not cutesy. It is not cut and paste. It is designed to awaken your own muse and give you the know how to go to that next level that you've been longing to reach. The spiral binding makes it easy to keep open on your desktop. The covers wipe clean easily. I love the formatting, the weight of the paper, the text style. All were thoughtfully employed to draw you in and open the creative side of your brain. Can I say more? Buy it. Use it. Get ink on it. Let it take you on a creative journey.--K. clement 4/5 stars - Chock-full of techniquesIf you're a fan of Tim Holtz, you already own this book. If not, it's a wonderful resource for how to use the many products that carry his name. The first part of the book is an ode to those products; Tim lovingly describes each one and offers a quick roster of suggestions for their use. Then comes the meat of the book; stepped-out instructions featuring multiple photographs that explain over 30 techniques using Adirondack alcohol inks, acrylic dabber paints, Distress inks, Stickles, masks, Grungeboard, etc. If you own any of these products or have seen them and been intrigued by their possibilities but short on ideas for their use, this book is for you. There's enough here to keep a mixed-media artist, scrapbooker or stamper busy for months! The book's thorough coverage of All Things Tim is also its drawback, however, and the reason I gave it only four stars instead of five. If, like me, your inventory of Tim Holtz products was even slightly lacking, you'll need to have a bake sale or live on peanut butter sandwiches for a week while you stock up on all the products. It is also difficult to find them all in one place; I had to shop at five venues to get what I consider the "basics." Yes, you can make certain logical substitutions (such as isopropyl alcohol for the alcohol ink "Blending Solution"), but most of the techniques rely on proprietary products; there's no way you're going to get the same result if you use anything but Distress ink, for instance. (And I'm not saying this is a bad thing! I do love to shop.)The final part of the book is devoted to a gallery of finished creations, each quite wonderful. Tim's style (grungy, distressed, heavy on the use of vintage style elements) is not for everyone, but he does what he does well, and he does it with panache and with fervor. I had the pleasure of taking two classes from Tim back in 2005 and still employ the techniques I learned in my projects today. Tim is a patient, upbeat and enthusiastic teacher; if you learn better by demonstration, I also highly recommend his DVDs.--L. Mallette Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
