While these books weren’t initially issued as a set, but their matching format and shared themes make them a cohesive collection. Henry Miller is rarely grouped with his contemporaries from the twentieth century. A perpetual non-comformist, Miller applied postmodern conventions with a candid delivery, especially where his work dealt with sexual and explicit content. In turn, he was one of the most banned authors from the era. His semi-autobiographical novels, from Tropic of Cancer to The Rosy Crucifixion, did not see full edition publications in the United States until the 1960s, after the Supreme Court overruled bans based on accusations of obscenity. This is why the first American editions of The Rosy Crucifixion series did not appear until 1965, whereas French and British editions had appeared several years earlier. It also makes this scarce complete set particularly notable. It took a challenge in the Supreme Court to get it published in the U.S.
