About The Royal Typewriter Company The Royal Typewriter Company began operations in 1906 though it was founded two years prior in 1904. Manufacturing began in Brooklyn, New York but by 1908 it was transferred to Hartford, CT. Its dominance in the marketplace began early with the release of their standard desktop typewriters and was further catapulted by their portable typewriter line in 1926. Royal was, in fact, very late in introducing their portable typewriters, most other manufacturers had done so for a decade or longer. During WWII the company halted typewriter production and manufactured guns, ammunition and airplane parts for the military. Over the next 60 years Royal built factories in the Netherlands, Portugal and elsewhere. Through countless mergers and acquisitions by companies like Germany's Volkswagen and Italy's Olivetti the century-old typewriter brand has survived until this very day.
