Description: This is a rare June 11th, 1944 playbill (with a special War Bonds cover) from the Original Broadway production of the groundbreaking RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical comedy "OKLAHOMA!" at the St. James Theatre in New York City. (The production opened March 31st, 1943 and ran for 2212 performances.) ..... The cast included BETTY GARDE, HARRY STOCKWELL, JOSEPH BULOFF, BETTY JANE WATSON, LEE DIXON, EDNA SKINNER, RALPH RIGGS, DAVID TIHMAR, KATHARINE SERGAVA, VLADIMIR KOSTENKO, KATE FRIEDLICH and BAMBI LINN ..... CREDITS: Music by RICHARD RODGERS; Book and Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN 2nd based on the play "Green Grow the Lilacs" by LYNN RIGGS. (This was the first collaboration for Rodgers and Hammerstein who would go on to write "Carousel", "The King and I", "South Pacific", "Flower Drum Song" and "The Sound of Music" among others); Sets designed by LEMUEL AYERS; Costumes designed by MILES WHITE; Choreographed by AGNES de MILLE; Directed by ROUBEN MAMOULIAN; Produced by THE THEATRE GUILD ..... DETAILS: This 44 page playbill measures 6 1/2" X 9" inches and includes a special cover promoting the purchase of U.S. War Bonds, full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is paper loss at the bottom of the front cover, a handwritten note on the title page and minor edge wear. Despite these flaws, this rare playbill will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
