The Movement for Civil Liberty (Hnuti Za Obcanskou Svobodu) was a Czechoslovak independent political movement that was established on October 15, 1988 in the context of Charter 77. The initiator of its creation was Rudolf Battek, a signatory of the charter and an independent socialist. The movement aimed to unite all democratically minded forces in communist Czechoslovakia from the moderate left to the moderate right. In their opening document – the Democracy for All manifesto – they demanded the establishment of a pluralist democracy, the enabling of small and medium-sized businesses or the protection of the environment. The text drew attention to the deep moral decay of Czechoslovak society. With this statement, movement became the first real political opponent of the ruling Communist Party. It was also the beginning of the differentiation of the internally very diverse Charter 77. The Manifesto was signed by 126 citizens, including Vaclav Havel. The movement published the magazine Alternativa and the internal newsletter Zpravodaj. The movement, together with other civic initiatives, organized the first officially permitted manifestation of opposition groups in the period of normalization on December 10, 1988 in Prague's Skroup Square.Several representatives of the movement were persecuted after its foundation, criminal proceedings were initiated against some, and others received a prosecutor's warning. In June 1990, the Movement took part in the first free parliamentary elections, but with a result of 0.3% in the House of People and 0.29% in the House of Nations it did not cross the 5% threshold and did not win any mandate (Wiki).
