Description: A fine mid-century original painting from American artist David Sinclair Nixon (1904-1973). A highly abstracted composition of a shipping port in bold expressionist colors rendered in gouache, watercolor, and ink, it is signed and dated for 1950 at lower center left. Good sized piece, the work measures 14 3/4 x 21 3/4 inches and it is on heavyweight textured watercolor paper. The reverse shows typical edge toning and mounting residue of brown paper tape, otherwise the artwork is in excellent original condition and ready for framing. David Sinclair Nixon (1904-1973) was an American modernist painter born in Bessemer, Alabama. He spent much of his early life traveling between the United States and Europe while studying violin. In the late 1920s, Nixon established a home with his wife, June Prudhomme, in Paris, where he first developed an interest in modern art and became friends with poet Ezra Pound. By 1938, Nixon had settled in New Orleans at 529 Madison Street and 532-534 Dumaine Street, where he and June would live and run a studio, exhibition and performance venue. The Nixons were quickly embraced by New Orleans art and literary circles. In the 1940s, Nixon opened the Little Gallery on Royal Street to exhibit his own work and that of many other local artists. The couple continued to travel extensively in Europe, Asia and North America, periodically returning to their home New Orleans.
