Description: Late 19th century realist watercolor of Venice, showcasing Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, by Henry Bacon, listed Massachusetts/France artist, watercolor on paper laid to paperboard, 13 3/8" by 17 3/8", signed lower left, under Museum Glass in high quality reproduction gilded frame with intentionally distressed finish, 18 1/4" by 22 1/4". Artist was born in Haverill, Massachusetts, enlisted in US Army in the Civil War, served as field artist for Leslie's Weekly, was wounded and left war early, and traveled to Paris and was one of the first Americans admitted to Ecole des Beaux-Arts, studying under Alexandre Cabanel and Edouard Frere. He exhibited at Paris Salons and National Academy of Design. He was known to have been in Venice at least 2 times in late 19th century, 1881 and 1890. By 1895, he turned almost exclusively to watercolor as his preferred medium. Condition very good for age, slight central vertical toning, laid to paper board in distant past (possibly original), acid burn to reverse of backing board, frame with intentionally distressed finish and very minor finish blemishes.
