"Hakone Yosegizaiku (Hakone marquetry)“ is one of Japan's traditional crafts. This is a handmade item with very detailed work.In 1984, "Hakone Yosegizaiku" was designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. In the late Edo period (around 1800), Yosegizaiku work was born in Hatajuku in Kanagawa prefecture which was a post town at the time. It is said that Nihei Ishikawa of Hatajuku started making trays and boxes. When craftsman combine very small different wood colors and textures and paste them together, create a small block of marquetry that becomes the basis of a pattern, and when paste these small blocks together, it becomes a seed board. There are two types of Hakone Zaiku product production techniques: ``Hikimono'' and ``Sashimono''. 1. Hakone Yosegizaiku "sashimono": Like paper thin boards (Thckness 0.15-0.2 mm) are cut out using a planer from seed boards and pasted onto small boxes etc. as decorative materials. This box uses this technique. 2. Hakone Yosegizaiku "Hikimono" : A piece of wood made by carving a thick seed board on a potter's wheel. Bon dishes, sake cups, etc. Please check carefully the condition of the item for any scratches, marks or stains referred to above from the photos shown before you purchase. If you have any questions or need any additional photos please contact us.
