Description: The first three images show plant habit and details of a seed grown founder plant originating from the lower slopes of Mt. Pabinama on Normanby Island, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. Plant span 36"/95 cm. The remaining images show the plants offered for sale, which are first generation artificially propagated four year-old plants recently transplanted from a compot to 3"/7.5 cm pots. Planted in NZ AAAA sphagnum. Hydnophytum orichalcum is a recently-described (2019) epiphytic caudexed any plant known from high canopy in lowland rainforests on two islands along the coast of SE Papua NG. This species can develop large, semi-solid caudexes when well grown, with an overall fully mature plant span of 5'/60". It flowers and fruits in youth but is rather slow growing as a seedling. Responds well to formative pruning to shape the canopy; something I will get around to doing to mine early next year. Still uncommon in cultivation, very easy to grow, and certainly unusual in terms of plant habit for a hydnophytine. All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
