Rumble (bonus for the first edition only -- NEVER REPRINTED!) Harlan Ellison’s never-before-published (or finished, for that matter) screenplay adaptation of his first novel, WEB OF THE CITY. Rumble—the script was titled per the re-titled novel—was written for American-International Pictures in 1963 as a Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello vehicle that would certainly have disrupted the teen idol image established by such movies as Beach Blanket Bingo. From 2009 until 2020, I was Harlan Ellison's editor, producing 29 new collections of his work as well as expanded reissues of his catalog titles. While working on these titles, I amassed a large collection of pre-release proofs—books printed to check the layout, proofread, or otherwise test the product before mass production—promotional copies, and finished product. In an effort to clear space and fund my next publishing project, I am now offering the last of these books for auction. Proofs my differ from the books as published. Sometimes, they have slight cosmetic differences—i.e. the spine text being adjusted slightly—or significant variations—i.e. the contents are in a different sequence or material was added/subtracted before publication—and I have endeavored to identify these variations.
