FRENCH ART NOUVEAU Paris~ BALLET DANCER ~ c1900 Watercolor Listed ILLUSTRATOR

Description: A lovely Belle Époque original hand painted watercolor from French Art Nouveau illustrator Henri Boutet (1869-1929). The painting depicts a Parisian ballerina in a classic pose. Nice size, the image measures 12 x 10 1/4 inches, with frame and mat the overall measurements are approx. 19 x 17 inches. It is hand signed in the lower right as well as stamped with Boutet's red chop mark. There is the merest hint of an old mat line around the image, otherwise the watercolor is in very fine condition. Henri Boutet (1851-1919) was a French Belle Époque artist whose work focused on the genre "La Parisienne". He candidly depicted women ranging from ordinary shop assistants to elegant ladies, managing to portray their common qualities of coquettishness and femininity. In 1902 he published a portfolio of 100 drypoint etchings titled "Les Modes Feminines du XIXe Siecle" which met with instant acclaim. With his reputation established, Boutet launched his own publishing house and sold his illustrations to periodicals such as Le Frou-frou, L'Assiette au beurre, Le Pêle-Mêle, and other artistic publications such as La Plume and L'Estampe Originale.
