Description: Elaborate bird helmet mask from the Kuba region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Artfully and intricately crafted, the face base is seemingly made of pieces of thick hide laced together with wire. The beak is made of woven grass, the eye projections of miniature basketry, the hair from raffia, and the helmet part from painted canvas. The whole is topped by a plumage of black feathers. Some of the shafts are broken, but the vanes are in mostly good condition. The front is decorated with two strands of African trade beads.Dates from the mid 20th century. Has been boxed up for about 40 years, so is in overall good condition. Purchased in the early 1980s from an African trader by a discerning collector of African ethnographic art. .
